We are passionate and committed to helping locals and visitors alike enjoy the great outdoors of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of the southern Rockies. Part of that commitment includes off-resort recreation like sledding, mountain biking, golfing, disc golf, various sports, and more. During the winter some of the best family recreation time is sledding down a mountain covered in white gold. Here are some of our favorite places to go:
Carson National Forest Rd. 5 – FREE
Just off US64 between Angel Fire and Valle Escondido, FR5 is at the horseshoe turn just west of Palo Flechado Pass. This location has small parking off the roadway and has towering pines on both sides of the sloped mountainsides. Hike down the road, choose your run-line, and hike up as much as you want. There are no services at this location, but you are less than 10 minutes away from Angel Fire so pack a lunch and hot cocoa and enjoy the day. Best of all this spot is free of charge!
Angel Fire Country Club – $5 per person
In summertime its a driving range, but in the winter it is a groomed sweeping sled run…..and a lot of fun. The terrain is wide open and gentle slope, making the run down safe and the walk back up a little easier. The fee can be paid inside the clubhouse, and if you need to warm up it is a great place to shop or head upstairs to fine dining at Elements.
W. Ninth in Red River – FREE
Behind the church at the end of Ninth street in Red River is a gentle slope and a long run for children and adults alike. Best of all you are right in town for restrooms, drinks, and some of the best restaurants around.
Riverside in Red River – FREE
Just in town at Red River next to the Red River Distillery is a hidden walk way and a bridge over the river to a thrilling spot to sled at high speeds with its steep slope. There is no parking, so park in town and walk down… it is definitely worth the effort.
